Bilal sent Kirsi a video of a girl, the daughter of one of his colleagues, from the Kpando District. Kirsi watched the video.
It told the story of a nine-year-old girl named Victoria, who was home alone on December 5th 2024 and wanted to cook something. It was assumed that she emptied a can of gasoline over the fire to make it burn better. In doing so, she caught fire herself.
She screamed for help until a passerby came along, heard her screams, and helped her.
At the hospital, her wounds were treated, she received eight blood transfusions, and finally, physical therapy.
Since March 2025, the family has been raising money for a crucial skin graft.
In Ghanaian hospitals, many operations and treatments are not covered by the state.
Sometimes, patients are allowed to repay hospital bills in installments. Often, however, they must be paid in full to undergo the treatments and operations. Many cannot afford this.
Therefore, it was especially important to raise the money in the time leading up to the operation.
The skin graft operation cost a total of 50,475 GHC. Bilal explained that several small teachers' unions had collected donations for the girl. Together, they had raised 40,830 GHC shortly before the surgery. This left a balance of 9,645 GHC, which at the time was approximately €581. Thanks to family and friends from Austria, as well as your donations to Smile of Nipa, this amount was covered.

Finally, the operation was successfully performed. Viktoria is doing well considering the circumstances.
